7 things we should know about Therapy and Counselling:-

  1. Psychotherapy and counselling are talk therapies whereby psychological and interpersonal problems are treated through communication and relationship factors between an individual and a therapist.

  2. Therapy provides a safe space to clients where they can talk about themselves without feeling judged or worrying that their secrets would be revealed to others.

  3. Therapy is different from talking to a best friend in two significant ways. First, in friendships people listen to one another’s struggles and support each other, while in therapy focus remains on just one person that is ‘the client’. Secondly, therapists undergo years of training understanding human psychological patterns, so their advice is informed by tried and tested theories and research.

  4. Even though psychotherapy is a talk therapy that depends on communication between the therapist and the individual, it is much more than talking about your problems. It is a professional relationship between a therapist and a client that is based on therapeutic principles, structure and technique.

  5. During psychotherapy, the clients begin to analyze their situation in terms of their moods, feelings, thoughts and behaviors. Psychotherapy helps them learn how to take control of their life and respond to challenging situations with healthy coping skills.

  6. There are many types of psychotherapy, each with its own approach. Different therapists have different specializations and styles. Also, different individual situations require different techniques. So therapy and therapist have to be matched well with the client.

There is no big eureka moment in therapy when a client overcomes their issues with one big cry. Therapy is more like a series of small breakthroughs, and when done with the right-fit therapist, it has the power to help us become the best version of ourselves.
